Zygaenid Moth (Zygaenidae Chalcosiinae Pidorus gemina - Walker, 1854)

Many specimens came to a light trap at Kadoorie Research Center, on Dai Mo Shan, Hong Kong, the last week of July, 1999.  Two larvae were found on May 22, 2000, feeding on Aporusa dioica on Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong.


Two ova, laid June 15, 2000 from an expupa imago.


Mature larvae, feeding on Aporusa dioica.


The cocoons were formed between two leaves, May 25, 2000.
The moths emerged on June 14, 2000.
Many other Chalcosiinae species fold a leaf over and form in the bend.

The mature (female) moth in a normal rest position.
The male moth looks about the same.

As can be seen both genders are similar,
the left one is a male, the right one a female..
Wingspan was about 33 mm / 1.3 inches and 27 mm / 1.1 inches, respectively
The undersides of some specimens may be irridescent.
