Scarlet Bodied Burnet Moth (Zygaenidae Chalcosiinae Histia flabellicornis - Fabricius, 1775)

Found as a caterpillar on Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong on December 21, 1998.  It was feeding on a leaf of Bischofia trifoliata.  Found 6 more larvae at Braemar Hill the last half of April, 2002.

The slug-like larva was 17 mm / 0.6 inches long.
Pupation took place 7 days after finding it.

The cocoon was quite thick and tended to partially fold the leaf.
The moth emerged 17 days later, the middle of January.
