Found as mature larvae in Choi Sai Woo Park, North Point, Hong Kong on June 21, 1999. Several larvae had moved from their (unknown) foodplant to the railing bordering the walkway. Cocoons were later observed under the railings in the corners formed with the railing supports, and also several in folds of a black plastic garbage-bag lining a rubbish bin. The moths that emerged from the larvae collected were all females. About 20%-25% of the larvae had been parasitized by flies, whose larvae emerged and pupated after cocoon & pupa formation of the panthona.
The mature larva was about 19 mm / 0.75 inch.
Pupation occurred on June 28, 1999
The cocoon was typical for a Zygaenid moth.
The newly emerged female moth in rest position.
The moth emerged on July 10, 1999
Wingspan was about 50 mm / 2 inches. The male
is much smaller.
