Hawk Moth (Sphingidae Macroglossinae Macroglossum fritzei - Rothschild & Jordan, 1903)

Found on Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong, May 7, 1999.  The egg was laid on Rubiaceae Morinda umbellata.


The egg hatched on May 9, 1999.


The newly hatched larva was 3 mm long.


2nd instar was May 14, 1999.

3rd instar was on May 18, 1999.
The larva was 36 mm / 1.4 inches long (including the tail).


4th instar larva,  4.6 cm / 1.8 inches long


The pupa was formed May 23-25, 1999.
The moth emerged on June 9, 1999, 15 days later.

The Larval foodplant,  Morinda umbellata.
