Allocasius Sphinx Moth (Sphingidae Macroglossinae Eupanacra mydon - Walker, 1856)

Found as ova and nearly mature larvae at St. Steven's Beach, Yiu Tung Chuen, Shau Kei Wan and Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong,  mostly from mid-summer (July) through September.  LFP is Araceae Alocasia cucullata  (Elephant's Ear).  Nothing else has been observed eating the leaves of this plant in Hong Kong (except maybe some scale insects).  The markings that appear in the 3rd instar larvae can vary considerably (see below).


The ova was found at St. Steven's Beach on July 1, 2000
and on Braemar Hill on Sept 6, 2000;
1.8 mm / 0.07 inch diameter


1st instar larvae, July 6, 2000;
The larvae were about 9 mm / 0.35 inches long.


2nd instar larvae, July 12, 2000.
The larvae were about 3.3 cm / 1.3 inches long.






3rd instar larvae, July 16, 2000.
The larvae were about 4.4-6.2 cm / 1.75-2.4 inches long.
The patterning that appears in the 3rd instar can vary considerably.


4th instar larvae, July 20, 2000.
The larva was about 5 cm / 2 inches long.


The moth in rest position.
Pupation took place on July 20, 2000.
The moth emerged on August 4, 2000.
