Found this specimen in North Point, Hong Kong in June, 1994. An ovum was found under a leaf of Ipomoea triloba (?) on September 20, 1999, at Braemar Hill in North Point, Hong Kong. It was reared to maturity.
This day-old larva emerged on Sept 22, 1999;
8 mm /03 inch long.
Five days later on Sept 28, 1999.
The larva was 28 mm / 1.1 inches long.
The next instar (3rd?) appearance, Oct 5, 1999.
The larva was 78 mm / 3.1 inches long at this stage.
Note the almost white ring around the tail horn near
the tip.
The final instar stage, Oct 8, 1999, three views.
The mature larva, shortly before pre-pupation shortening
began.
The larva was about 83 mm / 3.25 inches long.
Typical "jug handle" or "amphora" shaped pupa.
The pupa was about 50 mm / 2 inches long.
Pupation occurred on Oct 11, 1999.
The moth emerged on Nov 5, 1999.

Actually, most of the thorax with its noticeable colors
would normally be covered up.

Wingspan is about 102 mm / 4 inches
The ova of the larva above was discovered on the underside
of this species of yam/sweet potatoe, Ipomoea triloba
(?).
