Common Palmfly  (Nymphalidae Satyrinae Elymnias hypermnestra - Linnaeus, 1763)

Found several larvae at Tuen Mun Town Center, New Territories, Hong Kong in November, 2000 & 2001.  LFP is the Dwarf Date Palm.


A mature larva, found Nov 22, 2000;
3.1 cm / 1.2 inches long, not counting tails or head-horns


A larva that had been parasitized.
Found Nov 27, 2000.
The wasp was 2.4 mm / 0.1 inch body length.


A different parasitic wasp that emerged from a pupa.
The wasp had an 8 mm / 0.3 inch body length.

The pupa and pupal shell.


The male butterfly, top and underside.
Wingspan is about 7.2 cm / 2.8 inches.
The genders are very similar.
