Found as caterpillars newly hatched from eggs laid on new leaves of Litsea glutinosa (Pond Spice). The eggs were greenish and large, being over 1mm or about 0.05" in diameter. The mature larvae seem to prefer the newer, tender leaves, but will eat older, mature leaves. Both young and mature caterpillars will rest on the upper side of a leaf. Although they rarely extend them, these caterpillars do have scent/stink horns like many of the Papilio butterfly larvae.
The caterpillars were found in North Point, Hong Kong the first week
of July, 1998. The weather was hot and humid with occassional light
rain. Some others were found at the end of October, 1998, in Sai
Kung, Hong Kong at about 500 feet elevation.
