Common Jester  (Nymphalinae Symbrenthia lilaea - Hewitson, 1864)

Found as catepillars on Boehmeria nivea (Ramie).   The caterpillars typically rest on the underside of the leaves.  Frequently there will be a large number at one time and typically feed close together..  The nearly mature catepillars were found at Yiu Tung, Hong Kong on May 5, 2000.  This species is quite widespread and can be found thoughout the warmer months.

The larva with the red spines is the final instar form.

The larva in a typical, Nymphalid,  pre-pupal "J" position.


The pupa, about 2.31 cm / 0.9 inch long.
The shiny/white and yellow areas in the middle are shiny bronze in appearance.

The adult butterfly, top and underside.
Wingspan is about 4.8 cm / 1.9 inches.
Both genders appear similar.
Eclosure was on June 2, 2000.
