Circe (Nymphalidae Nymphalinae Hestina assimilis - Linnaeus, 1758)

Found as catepillars on old leaves of Celtis sinensis (Chinese Hackberry).   The larvae seem to prefer the older leaves, particularly those which have been damaged on the underside by a scale insect.  Both young and mature catepillars rest on the upper side of a leaf.  The multi-branched "antlers" on the catepillars are covered in very fine, brownish  hairs of about equal length.  I was not brave enough to determine firsthand if they transmit a toxin.  The larval form is quite similar to a number of other Nymphalids that also feed on Hackberry, e.g. The Japan Emperor (Japan's national butterfly) and the American Hackberry butterfly.

The catepillars were found in North Point, Hong Kong the third week of June, 1998 as well as the second week of July, 1999.  The weather was hot and humid with occassional light rain.   The butterfly generally takes about one to one and a half weeks to emerge.  The tongue of the butterfly is yellow.

The mature larva, about three weeks old.
