Tussock moth (Lymantriidae Orgyiini Orgyia postica)

Found as a newly hatched caterpillar at the top of Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong, the first week of October, 1998.  It was feeding on the Mimosa, Leucaena leucocephala (White Popinac).  Three mature larvae were also found the last week of October, 1998, on three different plants on Mau Lau Saan, Kowloon.   One of the plants was a wild, large-leafed Schefflera (octophylla).  The other two plants remain unidentified.

The week old caterpillar was about 5 mm / 0.2 inch long

The mature larvae were about 24 mm / 1 inch long

The cocoon was made between leaves.
The white pupa can be seen through the silk threads.
The moth emerged after 8 days.

The moth's wingspan is 27 mm / 1.1 inches long.
This is likely a male specimen.
