Lappet Moth (Lasiocampidae Lasiocampinae Dendrolimus punctatus - Walker, 1855)

Found as larvae at Choi Sai Woo Park, North Point, Hong Kong on April 3, 1999.  LFP was pinus.  Care should be taken with the larva, as the hairs contain an urticarious toxin that stings as well as itches, though some people may be immune.


An early instar larva, about 3.7 cm / 1.5 inch long.


The caterpillars seem to prefer a communal mode of living/feeding,
with different instars living together.

A  next to last instar larva, about 5.6 cm / 2.2 inch long;
June 20, 1999.


A  next to last instar larva, about 5.8 cm / 2.3 inch long;
July 3, 1999.

The mature larva was about 5.9 cm / 2.4 inch;
July 28, 1999.

 


The female moth in typical rest position;


This female moth eclosed on July 20, 1999;
wingspan was about 6.2 cm / 2.4 inches.
