Inchworm moth (Geometridae Ennominae Macariini Macaria abydata - Guenée, 1857)

Found many caterpillars in a Country Park next to the Shau Kei Wan reservoir in Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong on April 10, 2006.  They were feeding on Leucaena leucocephala.  Since the larvae were not reared from ova, the instar stages below are approximate based on size and appearance.  The three instar forms shown were all found on the same day.

The 2nd instar larva was 8 mm / 0.3 inch long

The 3rd instar larvae were about 15 mm / 0.6 inch long.

The mature larva was 22 mm / 0.9 inch long.
