Blue Glassy Tiger  (Nymphalidae Danainae Ideopsis similis- Linnaeus, 1778)

Found as ova on the LFP, Tylophora ovata, a vining Milkweed, on Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong.  The butterfly can be found throughout Hong Kong through most of the year.  Clusters of them can sometimes be observed on the plant,  Ageratum, whether fresh & green or dried & brown, apparently transferring some chemical scent to their bodies.

A 4th instar larva, about 5 weeks after hatching.


The  pupa.
The shiny/white areas are shiny gold in appearance.


The adult butterfly, top and underside.
Wingspan is about 4.0 cm / 1.6 inches.
Both genders appear similar.
