Large Brown Cicada (Homoptera Cicadidae Cryptotympana mandarina Distant - 1891)
Found at Braemar Hill, Hong Kong on May 17, 2002.   This is a fairly common species on the hillsides from mid-May.  They generally fly relatively fast when disturbed.  They can often be found in large numbers in the foliage and on the trunks of Chinaberry Trees (Melia azedarach).   Their strident song is quite noisy due to the large numbers in any given location.  This is Hong Kong's largest cicada.

The underside color of the female on the left is
noticeably yellower than the male on the right.
The yellow specks on the top surface are slightly shiny, like an etched surface.

Body length was about 4.4 cm / 1.7 inches;
Wingspan was about 11.2 cm / 4.4 inches.
