Zygaenid Moth (Zygaenidae Chalcosiinae Cyclosia papilionaris - Drury, 1773)

Taken on the wing on Mau On Shan, Hong Kong the last week of October, 1998.  It is one of the many dayflying moths in Hong Kong.  Some larvae were found on May 2, 1999, feeding on Aporusa dioica on Braemar Hill, North Point, Hong Kong.



1st and 2nd instars of the larva,
found the 2nd week of May, 2000.



Two views of a mature larva.  The younger instars do not look much different.


The typical Zygaenid cocoon was formed on May 14, 1999.
A cocoon was opened to show the pupa inside.

The male at rest.
The male moth below emerged on June 15, 1999.
A female emerged as late as mid-October, 1999!

Wingspan was about 72 mm / 2.8 inches and 49 mm / 1.9 inches, respectively.
The wings and body are edged with iridescent blue.
