Blue Shield Bug (Hemiptera Scutellerinae Calliphara stollii - )

Found at Chek Keng, Sai Kung, Hong Kong on August 13, 2001, feeding on Guava trees.  An interesting feature of this species is that the wing cover is fused into a single piece, rather than split down the middle.  In order for the wings to unfold, the cover shield has to hinge or lift up and then the  wings unfold out automatically to either side.


Length was about 1.1 cm / 0.4 inches

After death, the green hues of the carapace turned blue, as shown.
Perhaps that's why these are called Blue Shield Bugs?
